Students from all over the Northwest will gather and open their portfolios to representatives from the four premier Art and Design colleges of the Northwest. This is a unique opportunity for artists to receive individual feedback about their work from professional reviewers. The portfolio workshop provides a bridge between potential art students and accredited art colleges. In 2008 the northwest’s best art colleges will send representatives to cities all over the region to present workshops and hold portfolio reviews. These representatives will be searching for potential students and strong scholarship candidates, while answering the hard questions about art college.
A portfolio is simply a collection of your work assembled for presentation. Portfolios come in every shape and size, and may take many forms, just like artists. From original works to small binders with photos, students are encouraged to present their work in the format which best suits the art. Students do not need to have their work mounted or framed in order to present at a portfolio workshop. You should bring only as much art work as you can safely manage, or bring a parent to carry it for you.
A good portfolio is made up of 10 to 20 examples of your work that is most recent and important to you. You are welcome to bring both original art, in progress and finished pieces. You can also bring everything from a sketchbook to framed and mounted gallery ready art. Make sure you can manage the work safely and take precautions to avoid damage while you are moving your portfolio around the event.
Portfolio workshops allow students to receive feedback and critique of their art from professional college representatives in a “one on one” experience. Students are encouraged to seek information from the college representatives about their individual colleges. This becomes a great opportunity for students to explore many academic options in one place. The colleges have sent these representatives to provide encouragement and facilitate development in young artists. Don’t be shy! These college representatives are very interested in your work and process.
This event is designed for both you and the colleges to gather as much information as possible. You are encouraged to investigate the various programs to see which one would be the best fit. You should acquire as much feedback as possible from as many sources as you have time to seek out. Every college offers a different experience and the best way to find the one that is right for you, is to ask lots of questions of the representatives.
